A Science-Based Therapy
A healthy and pain free musculoskeletal system relies on its ability to maintain proper alignment, full ranges of motion, and joint/muscle strength so that it can manage the mechanical stresses resulting from life’s daily activities.
Over time, joints can become traumatized and overstressed so that they no longer function properly. This results in inflammation, restricted movement and chemical imbalances that produce chronic pain along with decreased lubrication and nutrition in the painful areas. Combined with adhesions (commonly known as scar tissue and oftentimes resulting from injury), the result is a recipe for chronic and worsening pain. The combination of unstable and restricted joints, along with adhesions is a spiralling snowball effect that causes worsening pain and loss of function.
Over a period of time, the painful guarding reflex from those injured joints and adhesions interferes and prevents typical health care methods from being performed effectively. The constant ongoing formation of adhesions (scar tissue) is a natural healing response by the body, and is caused by trauma and/or chronic stress to joints and tissue over time. These adhesions are more sensitive, less elastic, and weaker than the original healthy soft tissue and will continue to worsen. If left untreated, these adhesions can lead to loss of function and strength, along with further degeneration in the joints.
Unlike other treatments, MUA allows your doctor to reduce the painful limitations from these adhesions by restoring ranges of motion in a way that only the MUA procedure with sedation will allow. Twilight sedation breaks cycles – muscle spasm and pain cycles, which can now allow the doctor to restore joint motion, stretch shortened spastic muscles and break down the adhesions caused by scar tissue. The result can be improved ranges of motion and decreased pain.
